This is a high quality print from a vintage copy of Photograms of the Year 1912, the annual publication of pictorial photography. Madame d’Ora was born Dora Philippine Kallmus in 1881 in Vienna, Austria into a wealthy Jewish family. She was the first woman to study at the Graphic Training Institute in Austria in 1905 and was the first woman accepted by the Association of Austrian photographers in the same year.  While completing an apprenticeship with Berlin-based portrait photographer Nicola Perscheid in 1907, she met her future assistant Arthur Benda 1885-1969, with whom she returned to Vienna and founded her own studio,  Atelier d’Ora in 1907.  Women were not allowed to complete the most complex technical training so d’Ora employed Benda to focus on the mechanics, while she set the lighting, fixed the poses, obtained the clients and worked on PR.  The studio became the most elegant and renowned studio for artistic portrait photographs and her images were widely disseminated through numerous newspapers and magazines in Austria and abroad. They also had a summer studio from 1921-1926 in Karlsbad, Germany and opened a gallery in Paris in 1925.  After a parting of the ways between Dora and Arthur Benda in 1927 her work was published widely in contemporary magazines.  In 1940 as a disenfranchised Jew she lost her studio and spent the rest of the war in hiding in the Ardeche. The members of her family who had remained in Vienna died in the holocaust. Her subject matter changed radically after the war towards photographing concentration camp survivors and Parisian abattoirs. After being hit by a motorbike in 1959 she was left unable to work and died in Frohnleitun in 1963 in the house returned to her family after Nazi occupation.
