A super quality original watercolour painting, one of several by the artist offered in this auction; a village somewhere in rural England, probably in Northamptonshire, the artist’s home ground.   Faintly signed in watercolour, lower left, the work dates late 1940s to early 1950s.   We have inspected this painting outside its frame.  As with most of Hartley’s work, he inscribed the location and, probably, date of the work to verso to the top edge.   Unfortunately, the inscription is masked by the matte fastening.   Ralph Hartley (1926 – 1988) was a Kettering, Northamptonshire-based artist who flourished between the 1950s to the 80s.  He worked in a fluid, loose impressionist style, painting landscapes often dominated by birch, elm and oak trees.  Hartley exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1966, being recognised with a Silver Medal; he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists and Industrial Painters, with his work included in the collections of several leading middle-England art galleries, besides major collections worldwide.  A prolific artist, Hartley’s work is collected worldwide and is now more scarce and appreciative in value.  He mostly painted landscapes featuring the villages and farm holdings around where he grew up and lived his life, around Northamptonshire and in particular, Kettering and its environs,  including the villages of neighbouring South Staffordshire, Huntingdon, Norfolk and East Anglia, such as Cradley Heath.  He worked mostly in watercolours, with just a few works found in oils.   For examples of Hartley’s work visit artprice.com, artnet.com, besides the auction records of bonhams.com, christies.com and sothebys.com.  A super quality work from an experienced and collectible artist, in excellent condition presented in a later frame, this painting looks fabulous displayed   .
