_______________________ USE-IT started in 1971 (in hippie times) as a low-budget info desk for young travellers in Copenhagen. A few other initiatives followed later in Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, always with the same non-commercial philosophy. In 2005, the first USE-IT Map for Young Travellers was made in Ghent (Belgium) and it became very popular very fast. In 2008 the international organisation called 'USE-IT Europe' was founded to help more young people with creating their own city maps. Use It Europe: The Use It concept has been employed in several European cities. The first one opened in Copenhagen (1971), in Oslo, Norway (1991), then in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (1997), and in Ghent (2002) and Antwerp (2004) Belgium. The name and logo was invented in Copenhagen in 1971, but used without permission in Amsterdam 1972, and in London 1973.   Common services at Use It offices:  * Free accommodation booking service.  * Store your luggage free for the day.   * Free guides, D-I-Y tours (Do It Yourself), maps and other publications.  * Free access to Internet.  Use It Copenhagen: The first Use It opened in Copenhagen in the summer of 1971. It was a time when there was a lot of focus on the younger generation. At the end of the 60´s youth revolution the world was full of wandering hippies “the 68-generation”. The City of Copenhagen saw the herds coming, and the first Sleep In was opened by the municipality to avoid having young people sleeping in parks and in the streets. The purpose in the beginning for Sleep Ins was to have lower prices than Youth Hostels, and to offer cheap and legal accomodation, and to go with that a special tourist information was opened to cater for the crowds. This was Use It. The Sleep In concept came from Amsterdam in 1970. Use It Copenhagen is now an activity under Copenhagen City, Administration of Culture, Libraries and Sport. The last Sleep In under their administration final closed down after 35 seasons in autumn 2005 and with total number of overnight guests  640,830. The Use It Information centre in Copenhagen.closed down permanently on the 15th Dec.2007 after 37 seasons.  The Information centres in the four other countries continues.  And Copenhagen has now just 3 private owned small Sleep Ins. ______________________________________________ Prehistory From a sociological viewpoint, we have to look back to the beginning of the hippieculture, which grew up around 1965 in USA, for instance San Francisco, New Yorks Lower East Side and the political radical cultural life/milieus  in Greenwich Village at Manhatten, then spread to the most of the WesternWorld among the youth. It was a protest against many of the older  generations and authorities  values, Vietnam war,  nuclear power, conformity, capitalistic consumerism, bourgeois, careerism, conventional, middle-class, main-stream attitude. In social-cultural perspective was noted since beginning of 1960´s obviously changes in attitudes and life style among young people. A trend towards turning away  from established order and life style and insted search for “alternatives” Structural factors, f.ex.: Increase in prosperity, increase in number of young people, increase in number of means of communication  and longer education time for lager groups. Historical factors: the experiences from the cold war, the decolonization.  Since the middle of 1950´s was several manifistations of “the young people” as a specific category, for instance: rock ´n roll, beat and popmusic, Mods, beatniks, provo, Oranje Fristat, sit-ins and studentprotests, hippies, happenings, neo-mystics, Eastern renaessance, punk to New Age and Goth. A stream of 140 new leftwingorientated magazines was issued in Denmark 1967-71. More and more students  chosen humanistic aesthetic subjects, rather than business-related subjects.   The hippies “the Flower Children” goals was culturerevolution, “Flower Power”pacifism - “Make Love, Not War”, US out of Vietnam. “Yankee Go Home” Insted they were conscientious objectors (COs), and worked in peace movements.  Advocates of renewable sources of energy like windmills and solar energy. Cleaner food, with no additives or pesticides. In the late 60´s and beginning of the 70´s many hippies ate microbiotic “Micro-Macro” biodynamic food, based on Yin-Yang philosophy fron Taoism.  Many environmental and ecology movents still existing today  was founded in the hippie period. All the health shops and eco-friendly products today is the results of strong hippie intentions. Denmarks high production and export of windmills slowly began in 1972 by a hippiemovement “Tvind” Copenhagen and Amsterdam For some reason Copenhagen and Amsterdam around 1969 became Europe´s capitals of hippies.  Both cities was  located in liberated contries of similary mentality, cheerful, relaxed, friendly atmosphere. And both cities had progressive student milieus. Denmark legalized pornography in 1968, same year as the student  rebellion/revolt in Paris, and in ´69.at Copenhagen University. In that  summer, a hippiecamp opened in Northern Jutland Frøstruplejren or Thylejren with  approx. 5000 visitors.with a lot of press attention. Was established by a group called “Det nye Samfund” (The New Society). The youthhouse “Huset” opened,  five floors with cafe, restaurant, cinema, theatre and live music venue. Music events and other activities almost every night. The Freetown Christinia started in 1971, when disused army barracks were squatted by a small group of people, the place has since grown into a large self-contained community of about 1000 residents. Same summer the first Roskilde Festival took place, three days of the hottest music live bands and more than 50000 young people from all over Europe. Has continued and grown since. All these attractions together was contributory factors to cause a migration of alternative youth to Copenhagen. Also Amsterdam had several hippie-temples, like “Paradiso”, which also attracted (pulled in) a huge amount of likeminded in those years. In Vondelpark the youth were alowed freely to overnight in the years 1971-72. Later a book on that was issued. The first Sleep-in n opened in Amsterdam 1970. Sleep-in Both in 1969 and 1970 Copenhagen received many alternative tourists, backpackers (nowadays by Use It called “tourists on a low budget”). They mainly slept in the parks. One named H.C.Ørstedsparken had in 1970 at a time 400 overnights tourists. Then a mediarumour  spread that Copenhagen next year would be met with an “hippieinvation”.  The Copenhagen municipal executive committee invested the situation in Amsterdam, and  The Copenhagen municipal consultative youth committee suggested to establish a informationoffice for youth tourists and necessary Sleep-ins. The Lord Mayor accepted, the Working Party concerning Youth Tourism was set up and started 22th February 1971. The Use It logo was designed by a Danish advertising agency. Visitcards were printed. The informationoffice opened 15th May 1971, the first sleep-in (Titan) opened 20th May. Sleep-in Green Camp opened 15th June.  When the stream increased in the middle of July “Sleep-in 15” opened in a former grammar school.  Three of the sleep-ins were in buildings, but Green Camp was in military tents, rented from the civil defence. To keep the whole projects budget low,  conscientious objectors (COs), stationed on their civilian service was posted. At the end of the first season was the conclusion that both the informationoffice and the sleep-ins  was an success. The commissioner of Copenhagen police stated in a letter to the Lord Mayor: “..that the arrangements  contributed considerable to the summer 1971, seen by the police eyes, has passed off much more quiet than earlier years, and outstanding better that it could be feared regarding the expected huge inrush of youth tourists”.  Sleep-In Green Camp  Employees: One local authority employed manager/leader, two local authority employees and 10 conscientious objectors (COs).  The reason for the great success the first four years was mainly the use of the COs, their motivation and enthusiasm. They really loved their job. For example did many of them often still work even if they were off duty. Were stable, good sense of personal involvement and showed great responsibility by a large turn-out at about 98%.  The 18 military tents in Green Camp had wooden floors, mattresses and each tent could have 25 tourists in their own sleeingbags.   A night in 1971 cost 5 DKK (= €0.75) including breakfast. In 1972 the price doubbled to DKK 10 (=€ 1.5).  1973 a night was DKK 15 (€ 2.25). Breakfast was done and served from kiosk in wooden workmen´s huts. There was 5 workmen´s huts for toilets, showers, luggage room, reception, kiosk and sleepingroom for CO´s. Breakfast consisted of: bread, margerine, cheese, jam and tea or coffee.  In the evening the kiosk sold approx. 100 servings warm food: “Brown rice with Nituke”, which was boiled whole grain unpolished macrobiotic biodynamic rice with onions and sliced carrots fried in Sesamoil. At the top of the dishes they could put Tamari or Gomasio. Same dish every night, but they and we all loved it..  Average a tourist stayed in Copenhagen for just a couple of days. But there was really  exceptions. Some stayed the most of the summer, some  came back year after year  and even some stayed in Copenhagen for a decade.  So the experience in the Sleep-in made a good impression on them. A time they will never forget. Even employees from that time, when you meet them 33 years after they lighten up and tells you: “Those were the best days of my life” SI ACCETTA LA PROPOSTA D'ACQUISTO!!!
