About the book >.>.> With great pleasure I welcome the publication on the first book on beads found in Indonesia. It appears that through the history and identification of beads found in Indonesia, early trade relations since the dawn of the Christian era can be revealed. Beads are thus not only pieces used as adornments or in prayers, but they can be considered as important artifacts in unraveling the history of the past. We support therefore the motivation of the authors to publish a book on the varieties of beads found in Indonesia in order to preserve important data and thereby stimulating the re- search in old beads. They also hope to stimulate people's awareness of new local beads now manufactured in some villages in East and Central Java which will promote this handicraft. Mrs. Sumarah Ahdyatman, whom I have known since long, has taken the initiative for producing this book. She took up a serious study of the early beads found in East Java since 1986. She has already carved a name as an expert and lecturer in export ceramics found in Indo- nesia. Her activities and her studies in cera- mics date from 1969. In 1970 she co-sponsored the first ceramic archaeological excavation in South Sulawesi. In 1973 she co-founded the Ce ramic Society of Indonesia of which she is now Honorary Chairman and was the driving force behind establishing the Fatahillah Ceramic Museum in 1977 and the Adam Malik Museum in 1985 of which she is now the curator and director.
