Azul (simbolizando cielo/espacio)

Blanco (simbolizando el aire y el viento)

Rojo (simbolizando fuego)

English: A praying flag is a rectangular and colored piece of cloth, often hoisted at mountainous passages and peaks of the Himalayas. Though they are not used in other branches of Buddhism, it is believed that the praying flags go back to the Bön creed, which prevailed in Tibet before Buddhism. Traditionally they are printed using types of wood that have texts and images.

There are two types of praying flags: the horizontal ones, named lung ta (which means “wind horse”) in tibetan, and the vertical ones, named darchor . “Dar” means “to increase life, fortune, health and money”, “chor” means “all the sensitive beings”.

The lung ta (horizontal) praying flags have a rectangular or square form and are   attached along their upper edge to a long rope. They are usually hung in a diagonal line from top to bottom between two objects (for example, between a rock and the tip of a mast) in high places like on top of temples, monasteries, stupas or passages in the mountains.

It is said that its purpose is for the wind to carry the prayers with him and spread them over the distance.

Traditionally, the flags are in groups of five, one of each of the five chosen colors. The five colors depict the elements of tibetan cosmogony, and are arranged from left to right in a specific order. Different elements are associated with different colors in specific traditions and purposes:

Blue (symbolizing sky/space)

White (symoblizing air and wind)

Red (symbolizing fire)

Green (symbolizing water)

Yellow (symbolizing earth)

In the center of a praying flag usually a lung ta is shown (powerful or strong horse) which carries three burning jewels on it’s back. Ta is a symbol of speed and of transformation of bad into good luck. The three burning jewels symbolize Buddha, the Dharma (buddhist teachings), and the Sangha (buddhist community), the three vertices of tibetan philosophical tradition.

Surrounding the lung ta appear different versions of about 400 traditional mantras (powerful ritual invocations), each of them dedicated to a particular deity (in the tibetan scheme, deities are not so much gods but rather “aspects of the divine” that manifest in every place of the non-dual univers, incluiding individual persons). These writings include mantras of the three main buddhist bodhisattvas: Padmasambhava (Guru Rimpoche), Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig, bodhisattva of compassion and patron of tibetan people), and Manjushri.

Blau (symbolisiert Himmel/All)

Weiβ (symbolisiert Luft und Wind)

Rot (symbolisiert Feuer)

Grün (symbolisiert Wasser)

Gelb (symbolisiert Erde)
