Ancient fragment of portal from Italy (18x15x7cm) handmade by an unknown artist of the 17th or 18th century in terracotta depicting an apotropaic mask of Greek / Roman matrix (Faun-Aeolus-Gorgon-Satyr-Silenus?). The fragment is in perfect condition, it probably comes from some house portal in southern or northern Italy and was purchased by my father at a well-known art gallery located in Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Present in many cultures, apotropaic masks had the magical function of warding off evil spirits. In southern Italy the ancient habit of placing a stone or terracotta mask on the architrave or keystone of the arch has been handed down for a long time and was initially part of the peasant civilization, which by definition was the guardian of unique and rooted traditions. To be able to ward off bad luck (αποτρεπειν - apotrepein in ancient Greek), the masks had to be monstrous, able to scare away evil spirits and keep them away from home. The iconography of the masks is very varied, usually they are more or less frightening anthropomorphic representations deriving from the Magna Graecia prototypes: Satyrs and Gorgons in stone or terracotta that mostly adorned the antefixes of Greek and Roman temples. However, the most popular models are demonic faces with tongue out and showy horns ready to ward off the entry of negative energies. But other apotropaic symbols were constituted, for example, by the horseshoe placed as horns, the stripped heads of a bovine, or brooms tied or nailed near doors or windows Ancien fragment de portail d'Italie (18x15x7cm) réalisé à la main par un artiste inconnu du 17ème ou 18ème siècle en terre cuite représentant un masque apotropaïque de matrice grecque/romaine (Faune-Eole-Gorgone-Satyre-Silène ?). .
