Up for auction, from my collection is the classic West-German, robust and compact

 

CARL ZEISS 8x30 PORRO BINOCULARS

 

with serial number 559303, manufactured at the Oberkochen plant in West-Germany in the 1960’s. Comes with the original adjustable black leather neck strap and the original brown leather Zeiss hardcase. 

 

A well-used pair, with user marks on the black metal parts (see pictures), but leatherette covering good and undamaged. Lenses are clean, clear and unscratched. No internal haze or fungus, well collimated. The view is incredibly clear and sharp – a well-known feature of the West-German Zeiss 8x30 porro. Hinge still firm, dioptre adjustment and central focussing wheel work smooth and precise. So, this is a fully functioning pair ready for watching wildlife, sports or any other outdoor use. Also, a fine pair to be kept in a collection of quality optics.

 

Dimensions, very compact: only 160 x 98 x 50 mm; weight 490 g. Field of view: 130 m / 1000 m.

 

The original Carl Zeiss brown leather hardcase (sorry, no strap) shows user marks but is undamaged. 

 

Some background 

 

This ‘stubby’ Carl Zeiss 8x30 porro binoculars model was built from 1958 to 1978 at the Oberkochen plant in West-Germany and is both mechanically and optically superior to all 8x30 models made by Carl Zeiss Jena in the DDR. 

 

Zeiss’  biggest porro-rival ‘west of the Berlin wall’ was the Binuxit 8x30, produced by Leitz Wetzlar in the 1927-1962 period. In my opinion the Carl Zeiss (West) 8x30 is better: it is the best compact porro-prism model ever produced, also overshadowing the Nikon E-series. Just look at the beautiful finish, the very compact dimensions and excellent optical performance. Sadly, due to the popularity of the slender roof prism models, both Zeiss (West) and Leitz focused on developing new roof prism binoculars and produced far less porro-prism models. Their optical performance and field of view remain unrivalled. I have to admit I have said goodbye to the heavy and bulky porro-prism binoculars, but the study and compact Zeiss West 8x30 is the only porro-pair I still use in the field.
