Medal commemorating Josip Jelačić / Jellachich (1801-1859), Austrian general, Ban of Croatia (1848-1859).
Josip Jelačić Bužimski made his career within the Austrian Empire. The events of 1848 worried Croatia which then was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. Jelačić led the Croatian movement to demand attachment to the Austrian Empire and was named ban (viceroy) of Croatia by Emperor Ferdinand. He reorganized the army and quickly attacked the Hungarians revels. Despite his defeats, he subsequently became governor of Croatia and Slavonia.
