... Komponisten, deren Werke Nyman oft augenzwinkernd als Ausgangspunkt für eigene Kompositionen sieht, sind etwa Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (In Re Don Giovanni, Drowning By Numbers), Henry Purcell (The Draughtman’s Contract), Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (A Zed and Two Noughts), John Dowland (Prospero’s Books) und Anton Webern (Five Orchestral Pieces for Opus Tree). Nyman kombiniert hier musikgeschichtliche Zitate, avantgardistische Form und Eingängigkeit. translation in English Michael Nyman・Gattaca (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Label: Columbia Pictures Format: CD, Album Country: Netherlands Published: ℗©1997 Genre: Stage & Screen Style: Score, Contemporary Condition: CD media & booklet as good as new! CD case with slight traces of use. Information about the film, composer and work Gattaca is a 1997 American dystopian science fiction film starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. Directed by Andrew Niccol, who also wrote the screenplay. The cyberpunk film started in German cinemas on July 9, 1998. As a representative of the biopunk subgenre, Gattaca deals with some ethical questions in such a differentiated way that the film is shown at the University of Toronto to accompany the introduction to the topic of biopunk, bioethics and the science of genetic manipulation and is then discussed by scientists and students. action movie In a "not too distant future" the technology of DNA analysis will have progressed so far that it will be possible to determine in the human genome predispositions for all conceivable diseases, for mental and physical abilities as well as life expectancy. Offspring are almost exclusively produced by in-vitro fertilization and then selected by means of pre-implantation diagnostics. The few who are still conceived naturally are called euphemistically "God's children", but in reality they are considered "invalid", i. H. underprivileged in every respect. Discrimination on genetic grounds is officially forbidden, but regardless of this, the "invalids" are mercilessly excluded from modern high-performance society and form the new underclass. At the birth of the protagonist Vincent Freeman, after an immediate blood test, the nurse reads out what health risks await him in his life - including a weak heart and a low life expectancy. Unlike his younger brother Anton, his parents decided not to let him select. A constant rivalry develops between the brothers. Anton firmly believes in his genetic superiority and can always prove it in her childhood strength and endurance tests. Nonetheless, Vincent stubbornly rises to the challenge, and one day it's actually he who wins. Soon after, their paths in life diverged. ... reviews ・"An elegiac sci-fi thriller set as an accusatory parable of humanity-destroying genetic engineering." Told in an exciting way with disturbingly beautiful images, the film concentrates entirely on the deeply human message and the expressive characters.” – Lexicon of international film ・"Finely crafted in both form and content, this sci-fi thriller is the directorial debut of Andrew Niccol, the screenwriter of The Truman Show. Finally a film that is completely well thought out and in the tradition of films like 'Flight into the 23rd Century' and 'THX 1138' and presents a thoroughly conceivable vision of the future. " - Prisma ・Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the actors' performances, describing the film as a vision of the future that "is so oppressive because the set differs only slightly from the present." Michael Laurence Nyman CBE (born March 23, 1944) is an English composer best known for his music for numerous Peter Greenaway films. Nyman studied piano and music history at the Royal College of Music and King's College London, among other places. Because he rejected the then prevailing atonal contemporary serial music, Nyman gave up composing in 1964 and worked as a musicologist. In a 1968 critique of Cornelius Cardew's The Great Digest, he was the first to use the term minimalism for a new musical style represented primarily by composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass. ... Nyman is best known to the public as a composer for films, notably for Peter Greenaway, but also for more conventional productions such as Gattaca , The End of an Affair and most notably Jane Campion's The Piano, his greatest commercial success . Greater notoriety reached the piece Chasing Sheep Is Best Left to Shepherds from the film The Draftsman's Contract. Work Michael Nyman's music is based on the rejection of the contemporary music he found: "As a student [...] I wrote in the style of Paul Hindemith and Dmitri Shostakovich. Then I got in touch with the Manchester school - Peter Maxwell Davies, Harrison Birtwistle and Alexander Goehr - and not only was it an absolute imperative to write serial music, but all other music that wasn't serial than the music of to look at idiots. […] I didn't write a single note from 1964 to 1976 because I couldn't resign myself to writing serial music.” Encountering the American pioneers of minimal music brought Nyman back to music; in contrast to their model-free, precisely controlled form systems, he took his less restrictive compositions from the western musical tradition in order to create expressly “beautiful” music. Composers whose works Nyman often humorously sees as a starting point for his own compositions include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (In Re Don Giovanni, Drowning By Numbers), Henry Purcell (The Draughtman's Contract), Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (A Zed and Two Noughts), John Dowland (Prospero's Books) and Anton Webern (Five Orchestral Pieces for Opus Tree). Here, Nyman combines quotations from music history, avant-garde form and catchiness.
