Antique early Victorian christening gown, which has been produced from fine white cotton which has delicate white Ayrshire embroidery to the bodice, sleeves and and skirt. The bodice has extensive Ayrshire embroidery, which continues to the full ruffled sleeves. The skirt of the gown has a deep inverted "V" panel, with continuing embroidered and fine drawn thread work to the skirt, with ornate detail to the hem. The gown fastens to the back via a mother of pearl buttons, plus thread ties to the neck and waist. A very similar gown can be found in Heather Toomers book "Baby wore white, Robes for special occasions, 1800-1910", on pages 122/123, this gown is dated 1850-60's. AGE - The gown would date to the mid 19th century, circa 1850-60's. MEASUREMENTS - Chest = 18" (under bodice/arms) Sleeve= 3" (shoulder to cuff) Length= 45.5" (shoulder to hem) CONDITION - The gown is in good antique condition, although there are two small fraying holes to the embroidered skirt panel, plus there are several tiny pin sized holes. There are several tiny rust type spots to one of the sleeves, plus two faint grey marks to the skirt. Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition.
