         Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia ), flat-leaved Vanilla, Tahitian Vanilla. It is a vine in the orchidaceous family. Vanilla planifolia is a variety of climbing orchid . It comes from the tropical forests of Central and South America.

   Description  Vanilla planifolia is hardy in USDA zones 10 and above (35F/-1 C). Vanilla planifolia reach from 10 to even 15 m in height in its natural habitat. Fruit is produced only on mature plants, which are generally over 3 meters long. Vanilla planifolia is very easy to grow. Propagate by cuttings. Soil must be always moist,is good to mix the soil with a small amount of peat and sand.

Watering: abundant summer-, winter-moderation . For the best growth it requires full sun or partial shade with well-drained and moist soil. Vanilla epiphyte is, the plant is growing on another plant, but does not conduct the parasitic life.

      Properties Vanilla is grown mainly for seasoning. The source of the spices are harvested when they are not yet fully mature, then subjected to fermentation and drying. In this way vanilla pods are made. Also, it is used as a powder or oil of vanilla sugar. It is used as a popular ingredient in confectionery and food industry, including the production of liqueurs and chocolate flavor. Increasingly, it is also added to meats and sauces. It is sometimes used to flavor tobacco. Currently, the largest producer of vanilla in the world is Indonesia. It is used in the perfume industry as vanilla bean is effective in the regeneration of the skin, it prevents the drying and aging. Vanilla is a medicinal plant. It is used as a tincture in febrile conditions and digestive disorders. It strengthens the heart muscle. Vanilla is considered to be an aphrodisiac.Interesting fact: At the time of the Aztecs flowers Vanilla species planifolii Andrews were used to pay taxes .In Europe Vanilla was discovered in the sixteenth century by the Spaniards. They were treated to the Aztec drink called Tlilxochitl, which was chocolate, dipped in a vanilla pod. The recipe for this drink, along with the inventory of vanilla, sailed for Spain, where it quickly spread throughout the continent. Names vaynilla (small pod) used as the first in 1658 naturalist Willem Piso, but only since 1703 years was spread by the priest, Father Charles Plumier, the name of la vanille (French), or vanilla.

        Vanillon (V. pompona) also known as Vanilla grandiflora, Vanilla guianensis, Vanilla lutescens, Vanilla pittieri and Vanilla surinamensis. In the tropical zone, there is over a hundred different species of vanilla, but only three of them are used commercialy: Vanilla planifolia, Vanilla pompona and Vanilla tahitensis.It?s an orchid from the family of Orchidaceae. Comes from central and Southern part of America.

 Description is hardy in USDA zones 11 and above (40F/4.5C). These perennial, vine reach from 5 to even 15 m (16-50 ft) . Propagate by cuttings .Naturally occurs in loams,clays and sandy areas. It also requires an abundant watering and maintaining of a moderately moist substrate. In summer, the plant requires temperatures of 20 ° C to 25 ° C and during winter from 15 ° C to 18 ° C.

  Properties Vanilla Pompona is seen as the most beautiful from all the types of vanilla due to its big, golden-green flowers which it releases. It is also grown as an ornamental plant as well as a spice. Has a slightly different but much more stronger taste and aroma than the aroma and taste of vanilla planifolia which is a most common vanilla type of spice used in kitchen. The Aztecs were the people who had a good knowledge of Vanilla and had also cultivated it. They used to submit it as gifts for the Emperor of Mexico and seasoned chocolate and perfume with it. The plant has many medical properties. It?s perfect for tinctures, which reduce fevers. Tincture also helps with digestive disorders. Moreover, it is suitable to add to dairy desserts and chocolate.

Interesting fact? Vanilla sugar is a popular and well known product for everyone but it has nothing to do with any types of Vanilla. In medicine vanilla was used in which, according to beliefs, gave strength to the gladiators, banished and fatigues and concerns,and it also strengthened the heart.
