Poncirus Trifoliata Drago Volante - Arancio Trifoliate Resistente (15 Semi)

The hardiest close relative of Citrus, Citrus trifoliata is recognizable by the large 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in) thorns on the shoots, and its deciduous leaves with three leaflets, typically with the middle leaflet 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in) long, and the two side leaflets 2–3 cm (0.79–1.18 in) long. The flowers are white, with pink stamens, 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in) in diameter, larger than those of true citrus but otherwise closely resembling them, except that the scent is less pronounced than with true citrus. As with true citrus, the leaves give off a spicy smell when crushed. The fruits are green, ripening to yellow, and 6-10 cm (2.4 – 4 in)  in diameter, resembling a small orange.

Origin: Native to northern China and Korea.

Fruit Description:  The fruits are green, ripening to yellow, and 6-10 cm (2.4 – 4 in) in diameter, resembling a small orange, but with a finely downy surface. Some varieties are considered very acidic and seedy, but mine are sweet and able to be eaten raw.

Usage:  This plant is attractive to bees and butterflies. Provides winter interest. Because of its relative  hardiness, citrus grafted onto Citrus trifoliata are usually hardier than when grown on their own roots. The fruits can easily be eaten raw. They can also be made into marmalade or a refreshing drink. Also, the yellow part of the fruit's peel can be grated and added to cakes or tarts and, like lemons or oranges, it's flavour is delicious but delicate. When dried and powdered, they can be used as a condiment . A classic hedgerow plant that is virtually impenetrable due to its formidable thorns. Makes an excellent hedge, particularly for remote or uncommonly frequented areas of the landscape. Also an effective accent or specimen in the sense of being an interesting and unusual plant.
