Bought from Liberty London department store, London in 1975, this is an original true vintage solid wood chess table with much inlay marquetry. Cost £500 when bought directly from Liberty in 1975...must be the equivalent of £5,000 in today's money! We were told the table is handmade in India with pieces of mother of pearl and ebony. In reality, I think the table is a mixture of inlays in white bone, mother of pearl and black bone. You can see the natural grain of the wood throughout the table and the craftsmanship. Lovely piece for your home or home office. Perfect size to be used as an occasional table/side table or as an everyday coffee table when not being used to play games. There are a couple of cracks in the natural wood, some missing inlay and some cup rings. Honestly not that noticeable - all add to the true vintage character of the piece and does not distract from its beauty, but can be easily repaired if desired.
The middle section is a chess board/checkers board in white bone and dark teak wood (you can see the grain of the wood) inlay. This square is surrounded by a line of mother of pearl inlay. On the left and right side of the board are lovely rectangular sections covered in white inlay detailing of a traditional clover pattern in circles, in mother of pearl and bone. Inside these side sections are 4 ornate oval shaped inlay images of Indian palaces in white & black bone framed in mother of pearl. 2 are on each side & opposite sides. I know 1 is obviously the Taj Mahal, sorry, I do not know the names of the other 3 palaces. The 2 rectangular sides are again surrounded in mother of pearl inlay.
All around the entire rectangular shape top of the table are several more inlay lines of mother of pearl, with white diamond shaped inlay all around, plus very pretty inlay of white leaves/cloves/foliage shape motif with intertwined swirls of mother of pearl all around. Also underneath the table top, on the piece of wood facing, there are 2 further lines of mother of pearl all the way around which is a nice finishing touch.
The legs are slightly curved cabriolet in shape, again with ornate inlay detailing of swirling white leaves & clover in bone. Black petal detail in the centre of the white petals at the top of the legs. The feet are square shape and sturdy. The 4 legs screw on (makes delivery/storage easy).
Approx max. size: Height: 47cm/18.5" x Width: 91.5cm/36" x Depth: 51cm/20""
Chess board size approx: 38.5cm square
